A Rain Water Tank, also known as the rain barrel or the water butt, is a water tank that is used to collect and store rainwater runoff typically from the rooftops. One collection system can yield almost 623 gallons of water from 1 inch of rain on a 1,000 square ft. roof. This stored rainwater can be used for watering gardens, agriculture, flushing toilets, washing cars, and drinking.
Rainwater tanks can be constructed from materials like plastic, concrete, galvanised steel, fibre glass, and stainless steel. These tanks are usually above the ground and are opaque to prevent exposure to light. Almost all steel tanks come with an inner plastic lining to increase the life of the tank which prevent leaks, and protect the quality of water stored.
